During Addison’s whole pregnancy her only cravings were a PB&J and mark. Luckily he could supply her with both. As a pregnancy nickname mark christened the fetus nutter butter. When Ashley was born he wanted her middle name to be jelly. Together they (really she) decided to name her Ashley Lauren Sloan.
Mark reclined in his favorite chair while he ate a PB&J and watched the Yankees and Ashley. At almost eight months Ashley was a natural trouble maker. Instead of being mischievous Ashley walked over to her dad and pointed to his sandwich “bite?”
“Do you like peanut butter and jelly?” Mark asked not sure whether to give it to her or not being that she never had it before.
As a response Ashley nodded her head.
“Fine, here” Mark handed Ashley his sandwich. She took a small baby-sized bite and smiled.
“Good?” Mark asked
“Yeah” Ashley told him in her adorable baby way then took off to play with her toys, sandwich still in hand.
Giving up on the sandwich and the game Mark turned on the TiVo then started to follow his daughter.
2 and a half years later
Mark woke up to Addison nudging his arm. “What’s wrong?” he asked sleepily
“You’re daughter wants you” Addison then fell back asleep.
Mark listened for a moment and sure enough he heard Ashley whispering his name. He got out of bed and went into her room not bothering to knock. “You woke mommy up” he told her.
“And how’s that”
“What did you want?”
“A peanut butter and jelly sandwich”
Mark looked at Ashley’s princess clock “its three in the morning go back to sleep I’ll make you one for breakfast”
“Mommy not going to let me have it” Ashley said sadly as she crossed her arms and pouted.
“Then for lunch”
“I want one now”
“Sorry kid can’t help you”
Ashley covered her mouth with her pillow and started to scream
Mark quickly went to her bed “you’re going to wake up you brother and sister”
“It’ll be your fault”
“Go to sleep and stop being a brat”
“Make me a sandwich or I’ll scream again”
“You’ll get a spanking”
“I dare you to I will tell mommy” Ashley said threatingly.
Rolling his eyes mark picked up Ashley and carried her into the kitchen. “strawberry or grape jelly”
“Strawberry, grape is nasty with peanut butter”
“I feel the same way”
Addison walked into the kitchen moments later with a whimpering Dylan “what is going on?” she asked
“Just making a midnight snack”
Shrugging Addison took a seat next to Ashley “couldn’t wait for breakfast red?” she asked as she brushed hair out of Ashley face.
Smiling Ashley shook her head “nope”
“I hope PB&J’s are a snack mommy will approve of” mark said sheepishly as he sat down a sandwich in front of Ashley
“It’s okay but a piece of fruit would have been fine”
3 years later
On the first day of school mark helped Addison pack lunches while he supervised the kid’s breakfast. Ashley was starting first grade Camille was entering kindergarten and Dylan was going to preschool. “How do you make tuna?” Mark whispered to Addison
“I’ll make it…how did you survive before we got married?”
“I have no idea”
“Can you make me peanut butter and jelly?” Ashley asked Mark as she watched him pack her lunch into a pink princess lunchbox.
“Of course, Camille you want tuna right?”
“What about you Dylan?” Addison asked her mama’s boy
“ Turkey” he said giving her a missing tooth smile.
10 years later
Mark and Dylan were in the living room watching the Yankees when Ashley walked into the house slammed the door and went to her room ignoring the boys.
“What’s with her?” Mark asked Dylan
“Girl problems” Dylan air quoted “if I were you I’ll leave it for mom”
Ignoring Dylan Mark got up and went to the kitchen after making a PB&J he went to Ashley room and walked in.
“Do you ever knock?” Ashley snapped through tears
“I come bearing a gift” Mark handed Ashley the sandwich. She took one look then put it on her nightstand.
“What’s wrong with me?”
“Nothing you’re beautiful if you want proof look at your mother and me”
“Then why did Carlos break-up with me”
“Because he’s a fifteen year old boy and the only thing he wants from you is-” Mark suddenly became uncomfortable “you’re mother will talk with you when she gets home but for now eat the sandwich”
“Okay” Ashley picked her PB&J and started to eat.
Mark went back down stairs to finish watching the game.
“What’s wrong with girl world?” Dylan asked.
“We almost talked about something I’ll only feel comfortable talking to you about”
“Oh, I told you to leave it for mom”
7 years later
Mark knocked on the door to Ashley’s dressing room. “Come in” she called to him
“Hey” he said as he looked at her wedding gown and took in the fact that his little girl was really getting married.
“I…umm got you well made you something to calm you nerves”
“Maybe you should calm you nerves”
“I’m okay I just can’t believe you’re getting married it seems like just yesterday you wanted me to make you a PB&J at three in the morning”
“it was yesterday but I get what you saying”
“Doesn’t it seem like just last week you were trying to name her Ashley Jelly Sloan?” Addison asked Mark
“Yeah” he agreed “and two weeks ago she was nutter butter”
“I finally have proof that my dad is weird”
“You’re the one who eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at three and the morning”
“That’s because I know you’ll always make them for me”
“Not anymore now your husband can but if you decide not to go through with the wedding we can go back in to our old routine.
“Daddy” Ashley whined while Addison sharply said his name.
“Well you’re funnier when it’s not ten minutes before my wedding and I have nerves”
“About that” mark gave her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich “it’s not three and the morning but this should do”
3 years later
Mark reclined in his favorite chair while he ate a PB&J and watched the Yankees and his granddaughter from Ashley, Anna. At almost eight months Anna was a natural trouble maker like her mother. Instead of being mischievous Anna walked over to her granddad and pointed to his sandwich “bite?”
“Do you like peanut butter and jelly?” Mark asked not sure whether to give it to her or not being that he didn’t know if she ever had it before.
As a response Anna nodded her head.
“Fine, here” Mark handed Anna his sandwich. She took a small baby-sized bite and smiled.
“Good?” Mark asked
“Yeah” Anna told him in her adorable baby way then took off to play with her toys, sandwich still in hand.
Mark had a strange feeling that history was repeating itself and if so his son-in-law, nick needed to go buy more ingredients for PB&J’s because soon Anna will be joining nick and Ashley’s three o’clock snack. Giving up on the sandwich and the game Mark turned on the TiVo then started to follow his daughter.
